Job Opening: Collaborative Accompanist
About Grace Chorale of Brooklyn
Grace Chorale of Brooklyn is a thriving community chorus with over 135 members and a nearly 50-year history of choral excellence. We are looking for a collaborative accompanist to partner with our Music Director in continuing our strong tradition of musical excellence and community engagement.
The Chorale is dedicated to promoting and cultivating the art of choral singing in Brooklyn through performing a wide variety of choral music, collaborating with other Brooklyn arts organizations and engaging in educational outreach. The Chorale is also deeply committed to building a diverse and inclusive choral community and champions works by historically underrepresented composers; we are particularly proud of our commissioning program, which supports living composers and places our chorus in a unique position within the choral community.
The piano accompaniment repertoire is typically classical and contemporary. Depending on the pieces selected for programming, some of the pieces can be longer, extended works with orchestra, rather than a handful of shorter choral pieces. The responsibilities of this position are weighted predominantly toward piano accompaniment (approximately 85%), with conducting duties comprising a smaller portion (approximately 15%) of the role, and may also include piano accompaniment at our concerts.
Responsibilities:
Accompany the chorus on the piano during rehearsal and concerts
Step in as conductor to lead rehearsal if the Music Director is unavailable
Lead sectionals to help the chorus learn notes, rhythms, phrasing, etc.
Create rehearsal tracks as needed to help chorus members learn their parts
Collaborate closely with the Music Director on all artistic decisions
Qualifications:
Demonstrated experience accompanying choirs on the piano
Exceptional sight-reading and keyboard skills
Experience leading and conducting choirs through rehearsal
Enthusiasm for engaging with the broader Brooklyn arts community
Terms of Employment:
The position follows a seasonal schedule from September to late May, with breaks during the winter holiday season.
Rehearsals take place weekly on Wednesday evenings (7:00–9:00 PM) in Brooklyn.
Concert Schedule: Typically two performances of the same concert in December and two performances in April or May, plus occasional guest performances. If the performance is with an orchestra and there is no piano part, attendance is not required. We often are invited to perform with other local arts groups, so a concert season may include additional pieces.
The collaborative accompanist is expected to be present for all rehearsals, performances, and additional programming as agreed on.
Compensation: $10,500 (equivalent to approximately $110/hour based on typical workload)
